Club Championship
The weekend before last hosted the Men's Club Championship at Hassocks Golf Club. The competition is a 36-hole medal played over Saturday and Sunday. Much like most of this year's summer, the two days were very different, with nice sunny weather on the Saturday followed by wind and rain on the Sunday.
Tom Aye-Moung returned a gross score of 70 on Saturday to lead Greg Burt by five shots overnight. Tom was looking to reclaim the Club Championship from Danny Burchell after Danny's back-to-back victories. Despite an unexpected score of 81, which reflected the difficult playing conditions on the day, Tom won the Club Championship with a total of 151, one shot ahead of Alex Mullins. Olly Cook finished third with a pair of 77s for a total of 154. Congratulations, Tom.
The nett Club Championship was an equally close affair with Phil Burt beating Geoff Hydes on countback over the two rounds (the best final round). Phil returned rounds of nett 68 & 70 and Geoff rounds of 65 & 73. Jack Burns claimed third place with nett scores of 71 & 70.
A special thank you to captain Andy Taylor and general manager Greg Kemsley for all their hard work over the weekend.
Ladies Club Championship
The Ladies Club Championship took place on Wednesday, 6 July. The ladies played 18 holes in the morning and nine holes after lunch.
The gross Club Championship was retained by Nikki Henley. Sally Johnson won the nett Club Championship following an incredible morning round, returning a nett score of 64. Following this brilliant round Sally had her handicap cut by four shots to 25! Both of our winners can be seen in the photo here.
Ann Austin was the runner-up in the nett event, whilst Margaret Crook was the runner-up in the gross.
We enjoyed a celebration meal and the presentation of the various trophies.
Other Competitions
The June Medal was won by Margaret Crook and the June Stableford by Marian Smith. Three Madi's Mugs were won by Amanda Warren, Val Tingley and Jennie Sands. The July Stableford was won by Judith Leeves with a splendid 41 points.
Golf is a funny game - reported by Nigel Swinscoe
Just thought I would let you know what a difference a week makes, well six days actually. In the Club Championship, I managed to play to my handicap almost six times over and couldn't hit a barn door from five yards out.
Six days later I played at Sempachersee GC, host of a European Challenge Tour Event. In the afternoon we played a texas scramble event on the Lakeside Course. After many missed putts, the only way we could win the competition was with an eagle on our 18th hole, a 157-yard par-3. I hit an 8-iron to the elevated green which apparently (I could not see from the tee) pitched 12 inches from the cup and dropped in for my 4th hole-in-one. It was only after the event that they informed me the hole that was sponsored by Omega! Here you can see the trophy with my hole-in-one ball.
This is what keeps us all coming back for more punishment.
