Thought of the week

Great for the game

At a time when the game of golf is desperate for a wider audience, recent events will have gone a long way to helping its cause. From Justin Rose's Olympic gold to America's dominance in the Ryder Cup to last week's British Masters, things are certainly on the right track.

The British Masters was supported by Sky Sports and as such Sky were giving away thousands of free tickets prior to the event, ensuring that The Grove was full to capacity throughout. Once again the event was coupled with some innovative ideas designed to bring a fun factor to the week; and they nailed it!

Tuesday night saw the Hero Challenge take place under the floodlights with over 2,000 spectators transfixed by the one-hole knockout contest. The 18th hole was converted into a 156-yard par-3 for both professionals and celebrities to battle it out until there was one man standing. This was followed by the ISPS Handa Pressure Putt Challenge on Wednesday. Professionals teamed up with a celebrity and went head-to-head in knockout fashion as each player attempted to hole putts of increasing difficulty.

Not to take away from the main 72-hole competition from Thursday to Sunday, which was superbly won by Alex Noren, these new concepts were a huge success and will certainly bring some much-needed new faces to the game.

Winter golf

Take advantage of winter

It's getting towards the end of the golfing season, the light is fading, and the weather is slowly getting worse. The fair weather golfers will go into hibernation until sometime in the spring (or the odd nice day), and only the truly golf mad will stay. But what about those of you who want to play but are on the fence?
There are many different ways to make the most of the bad weather and freezing temperatures that will be upon us in the near future, such as:

  • Getting Lessons: You don't have to be on the course for 4 hours to get better, why not spend that little extra money, and a lot less time, and get a lesson in our state of the art indoor studio? You won't just be keeping your golf game fresh, you will be improving.
  • Getting Custom Fit: Custom fitting serves two purposes in this instance: 1) Having the best equipment possible for your game, and getting rid of any equipment that might be costing you shots (it's not always your fault) 2) Keeping you interested - No one likes to say it, but it's true, new golf clubs make you want to play golf. We're not saying you should replace anything that is suited to your game, but replacing what isn't so great, or that you don't like, will certainly make you want to play no matter the weather.
  • Practice: Obvious but neglected - Almost no one wants to spend 4 hours on a golf course when it's wet and cold, but guess what? You don't have to. Even if you spend only 20 minutes on the range, or 15 minutes putting, you are practicing and you will improve if you do it regularly. You don't want to burn yourself out so practice until your bored/tired/fed-up, then you can leave the course knowing you're on the way to improving.
  • Get The Right Gear: Another obvious yet neglected part of winter golf - You can't expect to enjoy a round in winter if you're cold and wet and have no means of staying warm and dry. Modern waterproof clothing is light, breathable, comfortable, and most importantly you can swing in it without feeling restricted. The same goes for waterproof gloves/shoes etc. If you haven't tried on waterproof gear for a couple years or more, you'll be surprised how far it's come.

We are sure there are some other good ways to keep improving this winter, please get in touch by clicking here and let us know how you will be improving your game throughout Winter; alternatively if you would like more info on the what has been mentioned, or would like to book a lesson/fitting, then please follow the same link, we will be happy to help.
