4 Club Challenge
On Tuesday 27th December the golf club held its annual 4 Club Challenge, players are limited to using 3 clubs of their choice plus a putter.
As the competition is a non-qualifier and designed to be fun, Head Assistant Professional Rob McGrory also played. His performance did not disappoint, showing all his lessons and leading by example.
Rob returned with a truly fantastic gross 66, a fine score with 14 clubs let alone 4, resulting in 40 points. Not wanting to be outdone and keeping it a Pro Shop affair, Alex Mullins returned with a gross 71 / 38 points off his handicap of 3.
Proving that better players / lower handicappers are better suited to this event, Greg Burt claimed the last place on the podium with 34 points off his handicap of 2.
Very well played to you all.
New Year's Day Plate
Congratulations to Scott Kemsley on winning the New Year's Day Plate last Sunday. 16 brave souls faced the rainy and cold conditions, with a few hangovers spotted too! Scott returned with an excellent score of 41 points. Second placed was claimed by Tom Aye-Moung with an equally fine gross 71, resulting in 39 points off his handicap of 4. However this was only enough to take second place on count back from Rob Temple-Smithson.
The competition standard scratch increased by one shot to 70, reflecting the difficult playing conditions faced by the players. As a result of his superb score Scott had his handicap reduced by one shot from 12 to 11 (11.3).
Well played to you all.
Lesson Success
I took great pride in Scott's performance in the competition. Scott had another lesson last week to kick-start his New Year's goal - to become a single figure golfer.
Something he posted on Twitter - just to put a little bit more pressure on himself!
Please follow me @MikeOvett if you are on twitter, plus Scott to see how his journey this year unfolds.
Please see a below a before and after of Scott's setup from his last lesson. I moved Scott slightly further away from the golf ball, which resulted in 2 benefits. Firstly, his hands were further away from his body meaning his arms were freer to swing. His arms were slightly 'trapped' by his body beforehand. Secondly, it improved his posture at address. This continued into his swing, where we are trying to improve his posture at impact.
Things are clearly working well, keep up the good work Scott.
