Father's Day 

I would like to start off this week's newsletter with a gentle reminder…it is Father's Day this Sunday! Are you ready? Like me, possibly not!

Coaches Corner 

At the start of this week I had a very common conversation during a lesson with a pupil. I discuss it so frequently I have decided to share it with you all; it is something I think we can all learn from.  

Why do we all wait so long to have a lesson?  Over a period of time your game starts to decline but you don't know why.  

What do we all do? Start to Tinker! We have all been there and we have all done it, me included.  

Why? Unless you are a mechanic you wouldn't do it with your car. You take it straight to the garage. 

Why do we all suffer longer than we need to with our golf? 

During the lesson, Steve Lawrence, my pupil, admitted he had been struggling with his golf for a few months before he had decided to come for another lesson. At the end of his lesson he said he felt frustrated, not at his golf (which was much improved) but at all the time he has wasted tinkering and changing things that didn't need changing. He could have spent the last 2 months playing proper golf!

Here is why Steve was so pleased with his lesson

Steve's old swing on the right was too steep during the down swing, this resulted in an inconsistent strike and a loss of power. After making some alterations to the swing path Steve's new down swing, on the left, is far shallower and has a better angle of attack.

By shallowing Steve's angle of attack and improving his swing path the through swing has more rotation with the shoulders and a lower exit point.

The changes also resulted in a better finishing position and a greatly increased weight transfer. The result - improved distance, accuracy, consistency and most importantly enjoyment! Not bad in an hour! What could a one hour lesson do to your game?


Why can your game suffer over time?  

I call this marginal change. Every time you play you change 1% without knowing, after 25 games you can potentially change 25%. However, because the change has happened so slowly and gradually it feels like you haven't changed at all. This is how we creep into bad habits and when the tinkering begins.

This is why the top golfers in the world are always with their coaches. The coaches aren't making major changes to the swings; they are making sure the players do not change their swings. It is maintenance rather than fixing. This is best practice.

Unfortunately this is NOT what I witness on a daily basis. Many of my lessons fall into the 'crisis management' category! I receive a desperate phone call saying 'you need to help or I'm going to stop playing all together'.
