This week's email has an exclusive interview with World Long Drive champion Joe Miller as he looks to defend the crown he won in 2016, as well as a couple of news stories from last week that certainly shine a bright light over the sport we love. It’s official: golf is good for you

There's been a lot of focus on Public Health England’s One You campaign in the media over the past week, which challenges each person to complete just 10 minutes of continuous brisk walking per day to help boost their health and reduce the risk of early death by 15%.

At the same time, a unique study assessing the benefits of golf on health was announced that, when combined with the above campaign, makes interesting reading. The project – the most comprehensive study on golf and health to date – found improvements in life expectancy, a decreased risk of more than 40 major chronic diseases, as well as positive impacts on cholesterol, body composition and mental health.

So, what's the take home message from all of this? Keep playing golf!

Now is the time to stop ‘hoping’ for better golf and take action. It is not too late to enjoy the rest of the season and start playing better golf.

This is the decision many pupils have taken recently and are already enjoying improved performance. Over the last week I have noticed a theme amongst many of the lessons I have given. I have decided to share this with you; maybe some of you will recognise similar faults in your own game?!

The importance of good posture in the set-up and during the swing cannot be underestimated. Something I hear from time to time is ‘everybody swings the club differently, just look at the PGA Tour’, this is true but they all have several common factors. This is what makes them such great golfers. Posture is definitely one of these factors.

Below are two examples from lessons I have given this week. I have deliberately chosen a male and a female of different ages to illustrate it applies to everyone. Both pupils were complaining of poor and inconsistent ball striking and a loss of power and accuracy, whilst both golfers are established golfers with handicaps they both felt there game had deteriorated over time.

Roy pictured above, stood in a very common set-up position amongst amateur golfers. Pictured left his back is to rounded, legs to bent and hands to close to the body. After making the necessary changes to Roy’s set-up he looks more dynamic and powerful.

Roy also made comment that he looked 15 years younger. Wouldn’t we all like to look younger!

Julie’s faults and fixtures were very similar to Roy’s. Again her back was to round, this resulted in her posture being to upright. Her legs were to bent and her hand position at address was to high. Pictured right, her new address position that resulted in immediate improvements.

Why can your game suffer over time?

I call this marginal change. Every time you play you change 1% without knowing, after 25 games you can potentially change 25%. However, because the change has happened so slowly and gradually it feels like you haven't changed at all. This is how we creep into bad habits and when the tinkering begins.

This is why the top golfers in the world are always with their coaches. The coaches aren't making major changes to the swings; they are making sure the players do not change their swings. It is maintenance rather than fixing. This is best practice.

Unfortunately this is NOT what I witness on a daily basis. Many of my lessons fall into the 'crisis management' category. I receive a desperate phone call saying, 'you need to help or I'm going to stop playing all together'.
