Club news

Osmor Trophy

The Osmor Trophy is the end of season finale for the Order of Merit. The competition is an 18 hole Medal and is played on Bank Holiday Monday.

Congratulations go to Alex Mullins who fired a fine gross 72 nett 68 to win the competition. However, it was a very tight affair! Shaq Smart and Tom Aye-Moung also returned to the clubhouse with nett 68’s, Tom matching Alex’s gross 72.

Fortunately for Alex his back nine bettered Shaq and Tom’s to win the competition on count back. Shaq claimed second with Tom taking third.

June Medal

Congratulations to Matt Roberts who won the June Medal last Sunday. Matt set the standard for some excellent scoring on the day with many players takings advantage of a golf course in good condition.

Matt stormed round the course and returned with a gross 76 nett 64, despite his excellent performance this was only enough to claim victory by one stroke from immediate past Captain Stuart Allbury.

Completing the top three and continue his journey to become a single handicap golfer Scott Kemsley kempt the good scoring up with a fine gross 77 nett 66. He reduced his handicap to 10.2 in the process – getting closer Scott!

Brighton Junior Golf

Brighton Junior Golf who provide our children's coaching Program for 4-11 year olds on a Sunday morning are holding a family open event on Wednesday, 13th June at 17.00-18.30.

During this fun evening families will have an opportunity to participate in challenges on the range and hit "Big Shots"! Have a go at lots and lots of games, tasks on the putting green and enjoy a "PLAY Golf" Experience. There will be a selection of prizes to be won.

This week’s newsletter you will notice a change of approach from me…. I’m not going to force my thoughts onto you but simply ask you to think about your own game and performance so far this year.
Has 2018 been the golfing year you had hoped for so far?

Two pupils who are definitely exceeding their expectations for 2018 are Matt Harper and Andy Betts. Please see their handicap worms below.

Yes - both have won competitions but both have significantly reduced their handicap. This hasn’t been from a one off good round but continued better play. Matt has reduced his handicap from 8 to 4 in the last 12 months and Andy has reduced his handicap from 20 to 14 in the last five months.

Ryder Cup hopefuls staking their claim

The final leaderboard at last week’s Italian Open made for interesting reading. Home favourite Francesco Molinari was attempting back-to-back victories after his previous week’s triumph at Wentworth but had to settle for second place, one behind Thorbjørn Olesen who captured his fifth European Tour title in the process. Both golfers will have their eyes firmly set on a place in Europe’s Ryder Cup team come September as well as several top-10 finishers from the Italian Open such as Cabrera-Bello, Sullivan, Poulter and Willett.

Someone else looking to compete in Paris is young American Bryson DeChambeau who conjured up a timely victory at the Memorial Tournament. There were several stories at the beginning of the week including Justin Rose’s opportunity to rise to the top of the world rankings with a win (he finished T6) and Tiger Woods’ latest event of his eye-catching comeback (he led the field in several tee-to-green categories but faced putting woes throughout the week to end up six shots back), but DeChambeau stole the headlines with his playoff win to secure PGA title number two.

Fairway wood off the deck

Being able to launch your fairway wood off the ground is a great attribute to have, especially when it comes to reaching those long par-4s and short par-5s. However, we know some of you struggle with this shot, so here is a simple drill to help turn things around.

Swing shallow to launch it high
Fairway woods are long and low lofted, which makes them tricky to get airborne. Many amateurs we teach lean back through impact in an effort to lift the ball up, but this typically results in a low strike on the club face and a weak, low ball flight.

Instead, try to brush the turf in front of your ball through impact. This will encourage you to keep your chest down longer, which can help you find the centre of the face and launch shots higher in the air. If you’re struggling to achieve this shallow swing action, try placing a glove around six inches in front of your ball and swing towards it after impact, as above.

Adjustability? So what...

From changeable hosels to sliding weights, drivers have never been as adjustable as they are today. But how does this benefit you? Read on to find out what you have to gain from playing an adjustable driver.

Personalise your launch
All of Callaway's current drivers feature the brand’s OptiFit adjustable hosel, which allows us to optimise your trajectory so you can launch it higher or lower, as well as choosing between a neutral or draw lie angle setting to try to improve your dispersion.

Shot shape control
On the GBB Epic we can utilise a 17g sliding weight that Callaway says can alter your flight by 21 yards from left-to-right to give you better accuracy, distance and control. So if your ball flight tends to be a fade to the right, we can move this weight to counteract this shot shape, helping you to find more fairways.

Don't outgrow your driver
If you’re planning on improving your technique and making swing changes, having an adjustable driver that you can alter to suit your new swing is much cheaper than forking out for a new model.
