Custom fitting - Callaway XR Steelhead
Last week I introduced you to Callaway Golf's newest iron - The XR Steelhead - and explained all the features and benefits to you. I also informed you we have received our demo equipment of the new product for the swing studio, and during the course of the last week we have started fitting with the new club with extraordinary results. Last week's newsletter contained the hype… this week's the proof!
I had a custom fit session with former Hassocks GC Captain Richard Copeland. Richard's current clubs were a set of TaylorMade Burner 2.0 irons, which were five years old. Having played with friends who had recently updated their clubs and seen a performance benefit, Richard was keen to try Callaway's latest clubs.
We tried three different models (all Callaway irons at Richard's request) in the XR Pro, Apex and XR Steelhead. After trying all the heads with numerous shaft options there was one clear winner: the XR Steelhead.
As you can see from the table above, Richard achieved a huge performance benefit from the new technology. His average distance achieved with his old TaylorMade 7-iron was 158 yards, with the Callaway Apex iron it was 174 yards and with the Callaway XR Steelhead it was 180 yards - a staggering 22 yard improvement over his old 7-iron. Remember this is not his very best shot but average versus average.
Hot off the press… Evidence exhibit 2
Just to prove this isn't a one off (and only for men), Marian Smith, also a past Captain of Hassocks Golf Club, has also been fitted for a new set of Callaway XR Steelheads this morning. She also experienced the same gulf in distance. Marian is currently using a set of ladies PING irons and achieved an average distance gain of 20 yards 7-iron versus 7-iron. Callaway are truly living up to their tagline - Kings of Distance.
How old are your irons? Are they older than 5 years old? Could your performance gain be even greater than Richard's and Marian's? Why not find out? Click here to book a FREE custom fitting.

Captain's Day
11 teams entered this texas scramble event. There were 10 individual prizes on the day, including a 'nearest the wiggly line' on the 2nd fairway - which Sid hit to within 8 inches not to be beaten. I tried to mix up the holes chosen from the norm and I hope everyone enjoyed the changes. With no restriction on drives taken, there was a joint lowest gross score of 55, 15-under-par! The day was won on countback by the "Bonjour Burts" team (Lee Paris, Greg, Howard and Phil Burt) with a fantastic score of 50.4; beating the "Pro and Low" team (Rob McGrory, Tom Aye Moung, Lee Cox & James Culley) in second.
Keith King Play'n'putt
On Sunday, the annual Play'n'Putt took place. Keith King was a captain at HGC some years back and he liked to encourage non-golfers in the family to come to the club and play. We had four pairs from the club and seven pairs from Keith's family. The rain tried to put a dampener on the day and Mark Page fell off the bridge on the 2nd (unfortunately I never saw it) but otherwise it was as good a day as ever. There are two competitions in one; one is the overall winning pair and the other is the non-golfer with the lowest number of putts. If you look above the bar you will see the trophy we play for. It was won by Anne Marie King and Paul Gumbrell - they seem to win every year, I think we need to look at their handicaps. The best putter trophy was won by Amy Burchell (Danny's sister) with 20 putts.
