September Midweek Stableford
Congratulations to the man of the Summer, Paul Gumbrell, who has continued his excellent recent form by winning the September Midweek Stableford last week.
Paul returned a fantastic score of 42 points to win the competition by a comfortable margin of four points. Matt Platt finished second with his score of 38 points, three points ahead of Denis Nixon and Geoff Hydes. Denis claimed third place beating Geoff on countback. The competition standard scratch remained unchanged on the day at 69.
Following his dazzling round Paul's handicap was reduced from 10 to 8.8. He then received a further cut to his handicap under the Exceptional Score Reduction system, reducing his handicap down to 8.3.
Exceptional Score Handicap Reductions
Don't know how the system works? Please read below… and pay attention! The Exceptional Score Reduction (ESR) works as follows....
When a player returns a qualifying score of four better than Competition Standard Scratch (CSS) or more in a calendar year, this triggers an initial ESR marker. An ESR calculation will be made the next time the player returns a qualifying score of four below CSS or better. This second qualifying score will also set a new trigger for any subsequent return of another low score when the count within the ESR process would be repeated. The handicap reduction is calculated in accordance to the table here.
It's not a coincidence
Paul Gumbrell's fantastic Summer hasn't happened by chance. Paul works very hard on this game and practices frequently, an example we should all follow. With golf you only get out what you are willing to put in. However, hard work is only part of the formula. Since Rob McGrory (Assistant Professional) started working at Hassocks in the Spring, Paul has been having regular lessons. This has led to his handicap reducing for 12.7 at the start of July to 8.3 today! This has included 2 Exceptional Score Handicap reductions.
A huge reduction of almost 35%
What would that mean to your golf and enjoyment levels?

'I kept things fairly simple with Paul, as I always try to do with lessons. We have mainly worked on three points during our lessons. Firstly, I increased the width of his stance to create a more stable base. Secondly, Paul's backswing was too flat, so we have worked on his swing plain to correct this. Finally, we corrected Paul's weight shift during the swing as he was swaying off the ball. It is fantastic to see the difference this has made to his golf.'

Goodbye to 'The King'
Arnold Palmer sadly passed away but his legacy as a true icon of the game will certainly live on. Labelled as the first real superstar of the game, it is said that 'The King' transcended the game of golf.
Palmer became the first major US superstar and went on to win seven Majors, including four Masters titles - and his rivalry with the 'Big Three' dominated golf.
Tributes have poured in, from players past and present, as well as from the US President. Jack Nicklaus said:
"He was more than a golfer or even great golfer. He was an icon. Arnold was someone who was a pioneer in his sport. He was the king of our sport and always will be."
