Last Monday I had the privilege to be invited to play in the Bentley Cup at The Grove.
I received the invitation to play from TaylorMade and represented their team. The Grove hosted a World Golf Championship (WGC) event in 2006. Tiger Woods recorded victory by 8 shots over the field with a score of 23 under. Having played the difficult course his score seems impossible. On the 9th hole there is a board to mark his achievements - Tiger achieved three consecutive eagles on the 567 yard Par 5 ninth hole. His achievement has never been matched on tour.
We held our annual Callaway Demo Day on the driving range last Friday. The event was very well attended and over ten people were fitted for new clubs and many more experienced Callaway's latest equipment. Callaway lived up to their reputation as being the 'Kings of Distance'. The improvements witnessed over old clubs were truly remarkable. John Murrant increased his average 8 iron distance by 22 yards and Brian Austin increased his average 6 iron distance by 21 yards.
Several of the players who attended the demo day took advantage of the fantastic offers Callaway are currently offering. Read below to find out what these great offers are.
We are holding a Titleist Demo Day on Wednesday 25th June. To book your fitting please click here.
The good weather has seen the return of the bandits in the competitions!
Geoff Barden led the way in the May Midweek Stableford. Geoff won the competition with a remarkable score of 48 points! Geoff recorded a 2 under par gross front nine worth 29 points, a fantastic achievement playing off an 18 handicap. Geoff's score was made even more amazing because it included a 'blob' on the 11th. Geoff won the competition by nine points from 5 players tied in second Place. On count back the top three was completed by Tim Osman in second and Chris Crook in third. Geoff's handicap was reduced by three shots to 14.6. Congratulations Geoff.
The Captain, Tim Cattaneo, continued the good scoring last weekend in the May Monthly Stableford. Tim won the competition with an excellent 44 points (gross 72). His points tally was helped considerably by an eagle on the par 5 11th hole. Chris Mullins finished second with 41 points on count back from Darren Parkinson. Tim's handicap was reduced by two shots to 8.3. Well played Tim.
Arthur Mayhew and John Franks shared the 2's pot. Recording the only 2's last Sunday, Arthur and John won £45 each.
The Seniors Section played the Mike Haselip Memorial last Monday. Mike was a former Seniors Captain of Hassocks Golf Club. His wife and son were both at the club to present the winners shield to Norman Whiting. Norman continued the recent impressive scoring in competitions with 46 points; he won the competition by 7 points from Ian Smith (2nd), Brian Austin (3rd) and David Green (4th). All three players scored 39 points and were separated on count back.
Congratulations to the Exclusive Team who recorded another victory in the second round of the competition. Steve Wyatt (Team Captain) and his team recorded a 3-2 home victory against a very competitive Boars Head team. The team have been rewarded with a home draw in the third round against Sweetwoods GC; the match will be played on Saturday 31st May. The winners on the day were Bob Shrieves-Yeates & Steve Wyatt 4&3, Gareth Agar & Rikki Hawkins 2 Up and Tim Cattaneo & Mark Simmons 6&5. Well played gents.
Cyril Blake Report (contributed by Keith Cowley). Another sterling performance from the Young at Heart Seniors team drove home a well earned victory (3-1) against an excellent Sweetwoods team. Sweetwoods turned out a very low Handicap team and battled very hard to give our 'Old Faithfuls' a run for their money, some will say that home advantage played its part, others would say that the gallant team from Hassocks ran out deserved winners on the day.
The winning combination of Brian Austin and Geoff Barden continued their unbeaten 2014 Cyril Blake season winning one up. "Stormin" Norman (Whiting) was first in the queue, with "Deadly" Dave (Green) for the post match photos after winning 3&2. Bringing up the rear of the field was Pete Ridden and Barry Wilson (in for Paul "Seve" Bristow) who triumphed 3&2 winners. A great performance, a deserved victory and a job well done!
