Congratulations to Gareth Agar on winning the June Medal with a gross 74, nett 66. 

A fantastic round considering the awful conditions experienced at the start of the round, with play being threatened because of the looming storm. Gareth was level pair for the final 15 holes of his round having double-bogeyed the 2nd and 3rd, his handicap was reduced by 1 shot to 7. Ian Martin finished 2nd on count back from Richard Copeland (3rd) and Graham Snelgrove (4th) all recording nett 67.

Personal congratulations to Ian Martin and Gareth Agar who have both recently had a lesson, it is nice to see their hard work has paid dividends. Gareth has been struggling with his short putting recently but following his lesson he has recorded a win in last week's Exclusive match v Sweetwoods Park and completed his double by winning the Monthly Medal. Ian's troubles have been with his driver; having tried several new drivers he decided a lesson was the best course of action. He was heard saying 'that was the best £20 I've ever spent' whilst leaving the office having returned his competition scorecard.

Div IV Matches: Holtye (h) Lost 3.5-1.5; Peacehaven (h) Won 3.5-1.5 

Seven ladies played in the Chard Johnson Trophy. This is a trophy that was presented to the club by two of our ladies specifically for the weekend players. There was a second trophy win of the year for Carole Hinchliffe.

22 ladies went to Tilgate Golf Club on Wednesday 24th May for our Ladies Away Day. The weather was drizzly for most of the day and the course made difficult by the amount of underlying and surface water. However, we all enjoyed our day, the winner for Division 2 was Sally Johnson and the winner of the Away Day Plate was Nikki Henley (pictured below).

 

Having achieved a memorable victory at home to West Sussex in round 2 of the Morrice Foursomes, our team of Ann Austin, Sally Johnson, Madi Habens, Caroline Littlejohn, Carol Reed and Kathy Sage, travelled to Haywards Heath for round 3 on 1st June. Unfortunately, home advantage and a very strong team proved too much for our ladies and, despite some close matches, we were unable to win.

It was a blood bath" says Seniors Captain as the Harrassed and Haggered Hassocks "Band of Brothers" were cut down to size by a very strong Willingdon Platoon. 

The Seniors put up a very brave performance against stong opposition in the 3rd Round of the Cyril Blake Inter Club Foresomes, but their efforts could only place them second in what was a one sided match. Willingdon ran out winners in what was near perfect golfing conditions. 

The seniors battled bravely but were only ever ahead in one match. Our own "Stormin" Norman Whiting and "Tornado" Trevor Franklin had a magnificent tussle with top Willingdon ceeds swapping Par for Par and Birdie for Birdie until a gentlemanly handshake on 18 saw the match halved.  Every match was a battle in its own right with the other pairings of Pete Ridden/Barry Wilson, Geoff Barden/Martin Tigg & Ian Smith/Paul "Seve" Bristow all tumbling in the crossfire that swept through the Hassocks ranks. 

Reaching the 3rd round in the Cyril Blake, having been paired against top opposition in previous rounds, was an achievment and showed that we have quality and great team spirit in the Senior Section, however meeting class opposition did put us in our place. Thanks team you should feel proud of a job well done to get this far. 


Hole In One

Congratulations to Dave Rutter who achieved his first hole in one whilst playing with the seniors last Monday. Dave recorded the ace on the par 3 6th hole with his 6 iron. He said 'I was just trying to get between the bunkers, the ball run across the green and hit the flag'. Sometimes golf is that simple!

The 2014 edition of the Hassocks Golf Club Members' Recipe Book is now available for purchase from the bar and the office. The recipe book costs £5 and all profits will go to the Captain's Charity - The Paediatric Diabetes Unit at The Royal Alexandra Children's Hospital. 

A huge thank you on behalf of the members and the charity to Brian Austin and James Wheeler. Brian has organised the creation of the recipe book from start to finish and James' company printed the recipe book. 




Congratulations to Russell who finished T5 in Virgin Atlantic PGA Southern Open Championship. Russell finished 8 under par for the 3 rounds, finishing 5 behind the leader. The result has moved Russell up to 16th in the order or merit after the first 3 events.
