US PGA Championship
Last Sunday Rory McIlroy claimed his 4th major championship at Valhalla G.C, winning his second PGA Championship and his second major of 2014. Rory McIlroy has now won his last 3 starts, with a World Golf Championship win at Firestone between his 2 major triumphs.
Rory become the 3rd youngest player to win 4 major championships, only Jack Nicholas and Tiger Woods achieved the record at a younger age. Will Rory be able to match or beat the records of Jack or Tiger, only time will tell? In his current form who can stop Rory? The only person currently looking capable is Ricky Fowler. His tied 3rd finish at Valhalla meant he has finished in the top 5 of every major this year.
August Mid Week Medal
Congratulations to Matthew Platt on winning last week's Mid Week Medal. Matthew returned a nett 70 to win the competition by one shot from Richard Copeland. Richard finished second on count back from Ross Emmins. Matthew won the competition despite scoring a 10 on the 16th hole; unfortunately it spoiled a truly special score but was good enough to record his first competition victory. Matthew is a new member at Hassocks, joining 2 months ago.
The scoring on the day was unusually high despite fantastic playing conditions. This reflected in the competition standard scratch score, reductions only 71. Matthew had his handicap reduced by 1 shot to 18 (18.2).
Four 2's were recorded on the day, Paul Bristow, Richard Copeland, Ross Emmins and Tim Osman shared the pot.
August Stableford
Congratulations to Wade Ayling who won the August Stableford last weekend. Wade scored a fantastic 43 points to win the competition by 2 points from Dick Crutcher. Third place was taken by Dave Green with a score of 37 points. Dave finished 3rd on count back beating Charlie Mayhew, Paul Mayes and Steve Baugh onto the podium.
The competition standard scratch for the day was 69. Wade had his handicap reduced by one shot to 11 (11.0). Six 2's were achieved last Saturday with Tom Aye-Moung, Greg Burt, Dick Crutcher, Paul Gumbrell, Arthur Mayhew and Peter Mullett sharing the pot.
Wade achieved his win with his new Callaway irons. Wade purchased a set of Callaway Apex Pro irons last month; clearly his new clubs are working well! To try the latest clubs from Callaway Golf like Wade click here to book a custom fit session.
