Something a little bit different… This week and last sees both sides of the pond doing their bit to drive golf forwards into the 21st century, with the aim of attracting a fresh crop of people to the game. Part of the reason the Ryder Cup makes for such fascinating viewing is that of the different formats played (foursomes, fourball betterball and singles matchplay) and the team ethos across the week. Well, last week’s PGA Tour event had something similar where pairs played two rounds of foursomes and fourball betterball across the four days. A glance down the leaderboard will highlight plenty of potential Ryder Cup pairings, from Rose & Stenson to Garcia & Cabrera-Bello, as well as David Duval & Jim Furyk trying to rewind the years. At the end of the play, it was American duo Billy Horschel & Scott Piercy who finished top of the pile with a four-day total of 22-under-par. Back to this side of the Atlantic where the second edition of GolfSixes hits the spotlight this weekend. There will be a number of firsts during this innovative event, none more so than when Thomas Bjorn & Catriona Matthews tee it up together to become the first male and female professionals to play together in a competitive matchplay format on the European Tour. The benefits of custom fitting!
This week Richard Valentine, a member at Lewes Golf Club, came for a driver fitting at our indoor swing studio at #MikeOvettGolf. Richard loves new technology and was already using a Callaway Epic, which had been custom fitted for Richard by Callaway Golf at a Fitting Day.
Always wanting more, as we all do, Richard came for a custom fit for Callaway’s latest driver Rogue. We started the session by allowing Richard to warm up and then recorded the performance of his Epic driver. Looking at the data gather I selected several shafts and 2 different heads from the Rogue line-up.
|
After trying the different shafts and best performing shaft was very obvious, it was a Mitsubishi Bassara. Through the custom fit process I reduced Richard’s launch angle and spin rate to optimise the launch conditions of the shot. This made an immediate impact to the performance of the shot.
The Rogue driver head also offers some performance benefits over Epic: - The driver head is lighter allowing quicker club head speed
- The driver head is bigger, meaning more forgiveness
- The ‘Jail Break’ technology has been improved, resulting in more ball speed.
And the result of all this - a 15 yard (average) increase in Total Distance!
