Parafix Winter League

On Sunday, 19th October, Hassocks played their first winter league match away from home at Mid Sussex Golf Club. The match was very evenly contested with Hassocks losing 3-2. Three matches went to the 18th hole, with two matches finishing in halves. Unfortunately, home advantage proved too strong. The individual scores were: Ian Martin & Mark Simmons won 5&4; Steve Baugh (Team Captain) & Matt Roberts halved; Rikki Jackson & Howard Lloyd lost by 2 holes; Greg Kemsley & Paul Mayes (Club Captain) halved and Tim Cattaneo & Mark Page lost 2&1.

The next match will take place on Sunday, 9th November, at home versus Lindfield. The sign-up sheet for selection is on the competition board. Team selection will be based on the following criteria: to recognise current form and the participation in club competitions, highest placing in recent weekend comps, winners and previous reserves from the last Parafix match and balancing the team from a range of different handicaps.

Strugglers Cup

Congratulations to Mark Page on winning the Strugglers Cup last weekend. The Strugglers Cup is an annual competition open to any member with a handicap of 18.5 or more. Mark returned an impressive score of 38 points in difficult conditions. His winning margin was three points over Brendan Kennedy. Brendan claimed second place on count back from Jon Aikens. Mark was delighted with his first competition win at Hassocks Golf Club.

Club Captain Paul Mayes presented Mark with his trophy after the game (pictured here).

Midweek Medal

Tom Aye-Moung won the October Midweek Medal with a fantastic score of gross 70 for a nett 67. Tom recorded victory in spectacular style by scoring an eagle on the last hole; this helped Tom win the competition by one shot from Bob Shrieves-Yeates. Third place was claimed by Simon Friend with a nett score of 70.

The competition standard scratch score increased by one shot to 69. Tom had his handicap reduced to 2.7 following his competition win. Tom also recorded the only two on the day (his eagle on the 18th) to win the 2's pot. As no 2's had been recorded in the two previous midweek competitions the pot was a treble , meaning Tom won £98 for his two.

Seniors' Stableford

On Monday the Senior Section played their October Stableford with Stephen Agar winning with an excellent score of 44 points. Stephen recorded victory by three points from Peter Ridden and Sam Marshall. Peter finishing second on count back over Sam. Following the competition Stephen's handicap was reduced by one shot to 17.9 (18), congratulations Stephen.

General Play Cards

I'm often asked the question whether general play cards can be submitted for handicap adjustments. Over the last few years CONGU have made several alterations to the rules permitting this. They have recently changed again; please see below the key parts of the new ruling for anyone wishing to submit general play/supplementary scores.

  1. You must state beforehand that you intend to complete a "Supplementary Card"
  2. The Standard Scratch is whatever the official score card states
  3. You must hand it in regardless
  4. Failure to hand in a card or a score above your Nett Handicap will go up by 0.1
  5. Maximum of 10 "Supplementary Cards" allowed in one year. March 1st is Day 1
  6. Scores can be recorded as a Medal or Stableford and adjusted in accordance with Rule 9
  7. It does not matter how many competition scores were considered. "Supplementary Cards" can be added to
  8. Course must be the official length and not shortened due to weather/time of year.

Winter Rules

WINTER RULES WILL COMMENCE FROM SATURDAY 1ST NOVEMBER 2014

Has your golf game delivered everything you wanted in 2014? Now is the time to start planning for 2015.

I've had several conversations recently about player performance next year. Now is the time to start working on your golf game for a better 2015. Waiting until spring next year is too late. Winter is the perfect time to start making improvements to your golf game.

Have the game you want by the start of next season. Does one aspect of your game always let you down? Struggling with your driver or always missing short putts? Take the simple step of clicking here to book a lesson to start the road to a better golfing season next year.

Two pupils that have experienced the benefit of lessons have both tasted victory in club competitions in the last week. Both Mark Page and Stephen Agar have taken lessons this year; I'm delighted to see the hard work has produced results.
