Lessons storm the Osmor Trophy
Congratulations to Lee Preston who won the Osmor Trophy on Bank Holiday Monday with a fantastic score of nett 66.
The Osmor Trophy is for the top 36 players from the end of year Order of Merit standings. Peter Mullett claimed second place with a nett 68, beating Steve Baugh into third place with a nett 69. Three players returned 2s during the competition: Greg Kemsley, Matt Roberts and Danny Burchell. Each player won a share of the pot worth £20. Following Lee's fantastic competition result, his handicap was reduced by two shots from 26 to 24 (23.9). Well played, Lee.
The Osmor Trophy was donated to the club by past Captain Phil Hare; Osmor was the name of Phil's company. I'm saddened to report Phil sadly passed away earlier this year after losing his battle with cancer. Our thoughts are with his wife Jill and their family.
I took great pride from the competition results over the weekend; I always follow the results of my pupils very closely in competitions. I was delighted to see four of my pupils finish in the top five in the Osmor Trophy.
Lee Preston who finished first with a nett 66; third placed Steve Baugh with a nett 69; and Scott Kemsley and Matt Roberts with nett 70s. Lee, Steve and Matt are all taking part in the 'Game Improvement Champion' lesson programme; all have made strong starts in their bid to claim the title.
All of the 'contenders' for the Game Improvement Champion have now completed their first lesson of eight. Week One's lesson was a swing/technique based lesson. During the 20 plus lessons I gave, there was a common theme amongst many of the pupils, a lot of the players were swinging the club too vertically in their backswing, resulting in a steep angle of attack into the golf ball and an out-to-in swing path. This results in the golf ball flying from left to right - a slice, a very common fault amongst many golfers.
By making a more rotational backswing we were able to 'shallow-out' their downswing result in a square swing path, therefore producing a straighter ball flight.
Pictured above we see Jon Robinson who made a huge change to his golf swing. The first picture shows his old swing with a steep angle of attack. The second photo shows his new swing with a shallow angle of attack. The difference resulted in a squarer swing path and a straighter ball flight.
Game Improvement Champion - Series 2!!
I have already been contacted by several people who wished they have taken the opportunity to be involved within the eight-week lesson programme but for different reason were unable to. For this reason I will be running a second programme for eight weeks starting in August. If you would like to register your interest please click here.
Mixed Match vs Mid Sussex - A great win for Hassocks 4-2
Australian Spoons - Foursomes - Winners Judith Leeves and Ann Austin who will go on to regional finals at Bush Hill Park Middlesex on 17th August
Joan Johnson - It is with great sadness that we were told by Sally Johnson that her mother Joan passed away peacefully on 7th May. Our thoughts are with Sally and her family. Joan was a very active member of the club over the years and will be greatly missed by us all.
The Chard Johnson trophy - This trophy was donated to the club by Ann Chard and Joan Johnson specifically for weekend players. This year the winner was Amanda Warren (pictured below) who also won the nearest the pin and the longest drive. Amanda, however, magnanimously did not accept the longest drive prize. This was given to Ann Austin who did a good drive but still a long way behind Amanda!!
Ladies News - contributed by Ann Austin
Club matches - Division Four - The team played against Rustington Ladies at home with the result being a win for Rustington by 3 to 2. The day was however enjoyed by all as is shown in the photo above.
The ladies have both a weekend competition and a midweek competition for each of the monthly qualifying competitions and the results are put together to give an overall winner and runner up.
